help with cc, please

i don't understand the directions for beginning with cc. so you pick up and knit 6 stitches along the selvedge edge. i can do that. but then it says to purl 5 and then p2tog - wouldn't that require 7 stitches total? and if each time i am decreasing by p2tog, then how can i repeat the purl 5 part each time? it says all the stitches will be "decd" away. i am confused.

So, you purl 5 and then purl 2 together, and one of the stitches that you're purling will be your CC and one will be your MC. Does that make sense? And then you knit 6 and turn and do it again until all 6 stitches of the MC are "gone".

if that doesn't make any sense, try the tutorial that comes before the pattern. You can just get an old pair of needles and yarn and work through it with 2 different colors. It only took me about 40 minutes to do the whole tutorial and it really helps to figure it out. i didn't do the tutorial on circular needles...just the one on straights.
